To Budget or Be-Grudge it!
Many of us to-be-weds (both male and female) talk a good game of "let's sit down and budget before we begin", when in reality we drag our feet and procrastinate because it is not a fun topic.
It is much more exciting to call up your best friend, grab your mom by the arm and head out the door for the nearest available bridal salon. Once there, we tear through the racks in search of our dream dress; hoping that once we find it the price will be within reason.
Once officially engaged, the two of you should sit down either with your parents (if they foot the bill) or by yourselves to determine a reasonable hard dollar figure to adhere too. Just like purchasing a new car-arm yourselves first with a definite hard dollar amount you don't want to exceed. Once this budget amount is determined you can then begin breaking items down into percentages.

Consider the following bits of wisdom:
Many items/services you choose will have hidden costs attached. If
you have budgeted $900.00 for your wedding
attire, remember that your gown is not your only cost. Additions
include shoes, stockings, headpiece, crinoline, lingerie, jewelry, alterations/pressing
and so on. If you are unfamiliar with the varying costs of these items,
it's smart to educate yourself to avoid sticker shock or overpricing
.
For a hotel reception, additional hourly charges are frequently assessed for staff at carving stations and bar stations, cake table. You may want to avoid buffet style serving to avoid these fees. Also consider serving a "spiked punch" to guests instead of open bar.
Did you know that extra fees can be involved in your wedding cake delivery? Many places ask $100.00 + simply for transporting the cake and setup. With so many cakes now shown in the stacked style (instead of columns); assign a trusted family member or friend to pick up the cake the night before or morning of the wedding and handle the task themselves.
Transportation to Die for: Everyone loves the limo ride for their big day. Limousine companies can charge morbidly high prices, but funeral home won't. You can save as much as ½ by considering this option. Remember, it's just their limo and NOT the Hearse!
When planning your wedding a year in advance, be mindful to get everything in writing up front. Horror stories abound from couples who were met with as much as 20% increases over their original quotes because of cost of living increases. Make sure the prices quoted will be honored through your set wedding date.
Your wedding is hopefully a once in a lifetime event, so prepare to plan before you prepare to spend.
